Influencer who encouraged followers to battle obesity dies after gastric sleeve surgery

An influencer who encouraged her followers to battle obesity has died after complications caused by gastric sleeve surgery.

Magnolia Karolina Morales Camacho, better known online as Magnolia Morales, suffered a cardiac arrest following 20 surgical procedures after the original operation.

The 26-year-old Mexican influencer had the operation on 21 July 2022 and she posted regular updates of her weight loss progress on social media.

Gastric sleeve surgery involves removing part of the stomach to make it smaller.

However soon after the major operation, she began developing intense abdominal pain, high blood pressure, and breathing difficulties, according to her family.

Her condition did not improve and she was transferred to the Culiacán Civil Hospital in Sinaloa State, where doctors gave her a slim chance of recovery.

Her sister Esmeralda said: “They only gave us a 10% chance that Magnolia would be able to lead a normal life again. And even that would be after many reconstructive operations.”

She then died on January 6.

Meanwhile, a Scottish mum almost died after her unborn son kicked her gastric band out of the womb.

Nicola Campbell-Brisland was rushed in for emergency surgery when she was 32 weeks pregnant and doctors told the mum-of-three she was mere hours from death after her son dislodged the band and she began to throw up a black-like substance.

She was quickly rushed in for emergency surgery to remove the band and save both of their lives.

She lost over six stone when she had the gastric band fitted in 2014 after years of struggling with her weight.

But since the near-death experience and removal, she has regained all of the 40 kilograms she lost and now struggles with her mobility.

She now suffers from Lipoedema which causes an abnormal build-up of fat in the legs and has been told she will need to undergo liposuction to treat the issue due to the severeness of her illness.

She is now forced to rely on a walking stick or wheelchair to get around and has been left unable to care for her kids on her own.
