Indigenous assistant minister sworn in

Northern Territory senator Malarndirri McCarthy has been sworn in as the assistant minister for Indigenous Australians.

Governor-General David Hurley swore in Senator McCarthy at Government House on Thursday in what was effectively a private ceremony for her.

She had been unable to participate in the first ceremony for the swearing in of the Albanese ministry, held at the beginning of June, after testing positive to COVID-19.

The Australian Electoral Commission on Tuesday formally declared she had been elected to the Senate for the NT, alongside Country Liberals senator Jacinta Price.

She will work closely with Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney, who was appointed to the cabinet following the May 21 election.
