CPA meet | India believes in resolving global disputes through talks: Om Birla

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on April 9 said India believed in resolving global disputes through mutual dialogue and diplomacy.

Addressing the inaugural session of the mid-year executive committee meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in Guwahati, he said India viewed the world as a global family that deserved peace and prosperity through talks.

“India is a strong votary of democracy and democratic values. Democracy is in our thoughts and actions and has become a way of life,” Mr. Birla said.

India’s strong, mature and vibrant democracy gave her the confidence to hold talks with other countries for resolving pending issues – a prerequisite for development – he said.

The success in conducting elections to 800 Parliamentary seats, 4,500 Assembly seats and 2.75 lakh panchayats testified to the fact that Indian democracy was functional, progressive and successful, he added.

The Lok Sabha Speaker also underscored India’s commitment towards achieving the targets approved at the United Nations climate change conference in 2021.

“Through initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, we hope to achieve the targets under the sustainable development goals by 2030,” he noted.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam Assembly played a pioneering role in shaping the socio-cultural and academic edifice of the State while giving a major push to Assam’s development narrative.

“The Assembly has passed many historic Bills leading to unprecedented changes in the people’s lives,” he added.
