The Indianapolis Colts announced on Monday that they’ve signed safety Ronnie Harrison from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
This was the corresponding move after the team placed safety Trevor Denbow on injured reserve, which opened up a roster spot.
Harrison was signed to the practice squad following the Colts Week 1 opener against Houston.
Harrison, of course, spent last season with the team, which included being on the active roster during the second half of the year. Harrison would play 234 defensive snaps, most of which came in the box as a linebacker.
Then this offseason, the Colts moved Harrison back to safety during training camp, his original position in the NFL. As the Colts experimented with who their best safety duo was, Harrison even saw snaps at free safety, despite the majority of his playtime time coming at strong safety, where ultimately he ended up for the bulk of his snaps during the preseason.
Over three preseason games this summer with the Colts, Harrison played 68 defensive snaps, with the majority coming in the box, but he did play some free safety and nickel as well.
Harrison was then released during roster cutdowns, which came as a bit of a surprise given the Colts’ lack of depth at the safety position. At a minimum, I did expect Harrison to be back on the practice squad right away, but that wasn’t the case.
Regardless, now back on the Colts’ active roster, Harrison will likely fill Denbow’s role as a core special teams contributor. Denbow is fourth on the team in special teams snaps and has played across multiple phases.
