Indian takeaway in Bristol will open 100% vegan restaurant

An Indian takeaway outlet in Easton is expanding to a new site in Bristol next month for its first ever dine-in restaurant. Vegan India is opening one of the first 100 per cent plant-based curry houses in the UK and is understood to be the first of its kind in the South West.

Vegan India is the plant-based counterpart of Tikka Express, both of which operate from 190 Stapleton Road. The takeaway outlet first started offering a vegan delivery service in 2021 and has decided to open a new restaurant on Gloucester Road, Bishopston, taking over the site of the former burger bar Atomic Burgers.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the restaurant wrote: "My Dear Vegan friends, thank you for your support last two years and give us [an] opportunity to serve you delicious Vegan Indian food. That was [an] amazing journey with amazing customers. Thank you all. Now we would like to expand our service.

The takeaway service claims to be the first restaurant offering a full vegan menu in the UK, although Oxford also has a restaurant offering a plant-based menu. While there are many vegetarian curry houses in the UK, very few are completely vegan due to the popular use of ghee in authentic Indian cuisine.

Vegan India is popular in Bristol for its meat-free versions of classic Indian dishes including plant-based chicken korma to meatless kofta chilli masala. It has said it hopes to open on Gloucester Road in February 2023.

The takeaway is at 190 Stapleton Rd, Easton, Bristol BS5 0NZ; the restaurant will be located at 189 Gloucester Road, Bristol, BS78BG
