Indian Opposition Leader Arrested In Alleged Corruption Case

Prominent anti-corruption blogger and opposition leader Navalny walks in central Moscow

Indian authorities have arrested prominent opposition politician Arvind Kejriwal in an alleged corruption case, sparking controversy and accusations of political motives. Kejriwal, who leads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and serves as the chief minister of Delhi, was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate, a federal financial crime agency.

The arrest is related to an investigation into a 2022 alcohol policy implemented by the Delhi government, which allegedly favored private retailers. The policy, which relinquished government control over liquor sales in the capital, was later revoked. Despite claims of no evidence of wrongdoing by AAP leaders, Kejriwal's arrest has ignited protests and criticism from opposition parties.

Supporters of Kejriwal and members of various opposition groups have condemned the arrest as a political move orchestrated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, a senior BJP leader defended the agency's actions, emphasizing the importance of upholding the law in combating corruption.

The timing of Kejriwal's arrest, just weeks before India's general election, has raised suspicions of political manipulation. AAP, part of a coalition of 26 opposition parties, has vowed to continue its electoral campaign despite the setback. Delhi's Finance Minister Atishi Singh affirmed that Kejriwal would continue to lead the government, even if he remains in custody.

Amidst the escalating tensions, the opposition Congress party accused the BJP of using the tax department to disrupt their financial operations. Allegations of frozen bank accounts amounting to $20 million have further fueled the political turmoil ahead of the upcoming election.

Kejriwal, known for his vocal criticism of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP, has garnered support from his party and allies in challenging the legality of his arrest. The unfolding events underscore the deep-seated political divisions and power struggles shaping India's political landscape.
