Indian Motorcycles Is Recalling Every 2025 Scout Over a False Neutral, Seriously

Just before Christmas 2024, Indian Motorcycle filed a Safety Recall Report with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding its 2025 Scout and Scout Sixty lineup. The problem is a gear position indicator on the dash that could potentially tell the rider the bike is in Neutral when it is, in fact, in gear.

This issue affects 100% of Indians' 2025 Scout and Scout Sixty lineup that were produced prior to December 23, 2024, regardless of trim. According to Indian, that means around 4,926 motorcycles in the US could be affected by this issue.

If a bike's gear position indicator says it is in Neutral when it is not, the motorcycle could move in an unwanted way. This could increase the risk of a crash, or potential injury for the rider or unsuspecting bystanders. That's why Indian says it is recalling all affected 2025 Scouts.

According to Indian Motorcycle's chronology of this issue, it received four reports of false neutrals that it thoroughly investigated. One report so far has involved an injury. Indian is recalling all 2025 Scouts to rectify this issue.

Dealers will be notified on January 23, 2025. Owner notification letters will be sent to registered owners of affected motorcycles on January 30, 2025.

The fix for this issue will involve authorized Indian Motorcycle technicians reflashing the affected Scouts' Engine Control Module (ECM) software with the corrected, updated version of the software. This should provide proper gear indication on the display, so that riders will no longer potentially receive a false neutral indication when the bike is not actually in neutral. This recall service will be provided to customers free of charge.

Owners may contact Indian Motorcycle customer service at 1-877-204-3697 regarding recall number I-24-11. Additionally, owners may contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or go to www.nhtsa.gov. NHTSA's campaign number for this recall is 24V-970.
