Punjabi singer and rapper Sidhu Moose Wala has been shot dead, Indian Congress party say

Musician Sidhu Moose Wala, 28, has reportedly been shot dead, according to reports.

The Punjabi singer and rapper - also known as Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu - was murdered in the Mansa district of Punjab, according to the Indian National Congress party and local media.

A tweet shared from the official Twitter account for the Indian National Congress reads: "The murder of Shri Sidhu Moose Wala, Congress candidate from Punjab & a talented musician, has come as a terrible shock to the Congress party & the entire nation.

"Our deepest condolences to his family, fans & friends.

"We stand united & undeterred, at this time of extreme grief."

It's been reported at the time of his death, Mr Wala had traveling with two other men before 30 rounds were fired during the incident which result in his alleged murder.

In a follow-up tweeted, the political movement added: "Law & order is a matter of extreme sensitivity.

"To loose [sic] a young & promising leader to insensitivity is beyond comprehensible.

"Those responsible for this brutal murder must be held accountable.

"Justice must prevail, and we will ensure it does."

In addition to his successful career as a singer and rapper, Mr Wala unsuccessfully stood for election as an Indian Congress party candidate in the 2022 Punjabi elections in December last year.

The late star lost to Aam Aadmi Party's Vijay Singla by a margin of 63,323 votes.

The Electrical Engineering graduate's musical career saw him feature on Billboard Canadian Albums chart, and his single '47' earn a ranking on UK Singles Charts.

Mr Wala's collaboration with UK artists MIST, Steel Banglez and Stefflon Don on his single 47 gained 33 million views on YouTube - a platform where the late star had over 10million subscribers.

Rahul Gandhi, a member of the Indian National Congress, took to Twitter shortly after the news broke on Sunday to pay his respects to the late rapper and singer.

"Deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of promising Congress leader and talented artist, Sidhu Moosewala," the politician wrote to his 20.6million followers.

"My heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and fans from across the world."
