The First Test looked to be progressing towards an easy Indian victory. The hosts were 190 runs ahead on first innings and no visiting side had ever won in India by conceding a first-innings lead of more than 65. With only five second-innings wickets remaining, England still trailed by 27 runs. That England were then able to set India 231, and win by 28 runs, was astounding. In 147 years of test cricket and 2,525 matches, only 80 games have been won by fewer than 30 runs or four wickets.
England senior spinner, Jack Leach, has been ruled out of the Second Test by injury, so England’s bowling attack for the Second Test comprises four specialist bowlers: a 41-year-old seamer with 183 caps and three spinners with three caps between them.
India have their own absentees. Virat Kohli is missing the test for personal reasons, and KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja have been ruled out by injury. The last time India played a home test match with neither Kohli nor Jadeja was in 2011. This all leaves India with a weakened batting order and players yet to find their feet at test level.
