NEW DELHI: After India's thrilling six-wicket victory over Australia in the fifth match of the ODI World Cup at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium, Virat Kohli received the gold medal for the best fielding from Indian fielding coach T Dilip. A behind-the-scenes video posted by the BCCI captured the moment when Kohli was presented with the medal by the fielding coach.
During the presentation, the Indian fielding coach praised Shreyas Iyer for his excellent diving and fielding efforts. However, Dilip emphasized that the team values consistency and overall performance, rather than just one catch, which is why Virat Kohli was chosen for the best fielding award.
"In today's game against Australia, Shreyas Iyer was excellent with his diving while fielding. But in our team, we always talk about consistency. It's not just about one catch; it's about overall performance and not only doing your job but also supporting and encouraging your teammates to perform better. So, I think this one goes to Virat," said T Dilip while presenting the medal.
In the first innings, Virat Kohli played a crucial role in the field, saving at least 20-30 runs with his exceptional fielding skills. He also took a brilliant catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, giving India an early advantage in the match.
The Indian team, sporting their new practice colors of orange, looked relaxed and confident after their remarkable win, despite facing a challenging situation at the beginning of the second innings while chasing Australia's total of 199.
During the presentation, coach Rahul Dravid asked fielding coach T Dilip to award the fielding medal, bringing smiles to the team's faces.
India's spin bowling trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin put up an outstanding performance in the first innings, dismissing the Australian team for 199. Jadeja claimed three wickets, while Kuldeep and Jasprit Bumrah took two each. Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya, and Ashwin each took one wicket.
In the second innings, India got off to a shaky start, losing Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer without scoring any runs. However, Virat Kohli (85 from 116 balls) and KL Rahul (97* from 115 balls) formed a solid partnership of 165 runs, leading India to a six-wicket victory over Australia.
In their upcoming fixture, India will face Afghanistan on October 11 at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium.
