South Africa were bowled out for 55 before India lost six wickets without scoring a run on a remarkable first day of the Second Test in Cape Town.
The Proteas, who had won the series opener in good style last week, were blown away inside the opening session after captain Dean Elgar, playing his final Test match, had won the toss and elected to bat this morning.
A total of 55 was the home side’s lowest in the format in 92 years, since they were rolled for 45 by Australia in 1932.
Mohammed Siraj was sensational for the tourists, taking career-best figures of six-for-15 with the ball as only two home batters reached double figures in an innings that lasted a mere 23.2 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah also picked up two wickets, as did Mukesh Kumar, who was required to bowl just 14 deliveries on his return to the side and did so without conceding a run.
Despite losing opener Yashavi Jaiswal when he was bowled by Kagiso Rabada for seven-ball duck, India appeared set for a hefty first innings lead when shepherded to 153 for four, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma all falling within sight of a half-century.
However, Lungi Ngidi struck three times in the same over to remove Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul and Bumrah at the start of an epic collapse in which India lost their final six wickets in the space of 11 balls without adding to the score.
With 25 overs still left in the day, South Africa began their second innings trailing by 98 runs, with Elgar at the crease for the final time in his Test career.
