India’s top 10 e-commerce apps

Bengaluru: As online shopping shifts to smartphones from desktop computers, it’s become crucial for e-commerce companies to have mobile apps that are easy to navigate and designed attractively. To achieve these goals, most large e-commerce companies such as Flipkart Ltd and its unit Myntra and Snapdeal (Jasper Infotech Pvt. Ltd) have paid top dollar to attract product experts, whose main task is to improve the user experience on mobiles and build a stronger tech infrastructure.

Mint has compiled a list of the number of app downloads, user reviews and app ratings of 10 popular e-commerce brands, based on data from Google Inc.’s Play store.

These numbers give an indication of the level of engagement these brands have with users. They also indicate user perception of the apps as well as the products and services of these 10 brands.

App usage data is important as many of the 10 brands in the study such as Flipkart and Snapdeal get more than 70% of their traffic from them while others such as Myntra, Uber Technologies Inc. and Ola (ANI Technologies Inc.) are app-only platforms.

To be sure, this is not an exact study. E-commerce firms employ agencies to boost their app downloads, irrespective of whether these apps are used or not. Then, many users who download apps don’t use them, according to executives at e-commerce companies.

Still, this data does give an idea of the popularity of the apps with users.
