India has commenced the process of counting votes from its extensive six-week election, which is being closely watched as a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership over the past decade. The election, involving nearly 970 million eligible voters, is expected to secure Modi a third term in office based on exit polls predicting a victory for his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies.

Early tallies from the Election Commission indicate that the BJP is leading comfortably, with the party ahead in 239 out of 542 parliamentary seats. The main opposition Congress party is currently leading in 96 constituencies. A total of 272 seats are required for a majority in parliament.

As the counting process unfolds, precautions are being taken due to scorching temperatures in the region, with temperatures expected to reach 106°F. Workers and officials are ensuring adequate measures are in place to combat the heat, including providing water and utilizing cooling systems at counting stations.

Women voters are emerging as a crucial demographic in Indian elections, with their turnout steadily increasing in recent years. Political parties have been actively engaging with women through various initiatives, with both the BJP and the opposition alliance targeting this key voting bloc with tailored programs and promises.

Indian markets opened lower following the exit polls, despite closing at record highs the previous day. The business community has largely supported Modi's policies, anticipating his re-election. The market dip also reflects a broader trend in Asian markets following reports of a slowdown in the U.S. manufacturing sector.

The meticulous counting process involves tallying the 642 million votes cast using a combination of postal ballots and electronic voting machines. Election officials are working diligently to complete the process by the end of the day, ensuring a transparent and efficient outcome for the world's largest democratic exercise.

As the final results are awaited, the election has not only captured the attention of the nation but also garnered global interest as a significant moment in India's political landscape.
