THE convener of a Scottish independence campaign group and former MP has announced he is seeking selection for next year’s Holyrood election.
Former Linlithgow and Falkirk East MP Martyn Day has thrown his hat in the ring for the new Scottish Parliament constituency of the same name.
Day, who lost to Labour’s Kirsteen Sullivan in the new Bathgate and Linlithgow seat in July, is also the co-convener of the Scottish Independence Convention, alongside Glasgow councillor Roza Salih.
He said: “Having danced around for all eternity on the Westminster hamster wheel, I can say with absolute certainty that the fight for independence will only be won here at home in the heart of our communities.
“This election is too important for token gestures. We need experienced voices at Holyrood who know how to win and who understand both the big picture and the local detail. I’ve dedicated my life to our cause—now I’m ready to bring that experience home to Holyrood and help win independence for Scotland.”
Day announced his bid with a 35-page manifesto, which outlines his campaigning work in the constituency and in Westminster.
It also features endorsements from his former Westminster colleagues Philippa Whitford, Ian Blackford and John McNally, as well as from Falkirk East’s current MSP Michelle Thomson, who announced she would be stepping down at the upcoming election, and from former SNP special adviser Campbell Gunn.
Day is running against Catherine Cavaye-Williams, Stacey Devine and David Mitchell.
