Incredible West Country beach that can only be reached by tunnels - with a stunning sea pool

Beaches across the West Country are famed around the world due to their stunning shorelines and breathtaking scenery. But sadly this does mean that huge crowds can gather in the summer months and you could find yourself fighting over space.

For travellers looking for a quieter option, there is a hidden beach that can only be reached through a maze of tunnels. Sharing the incredible location on TikTok, CJexplores wrote: "Have you seen anything like THIS!?

"Located in Ilfracombe on the North Devon coast, Tunnels Beaches is one of a kind. Created in the 1820’s the four tunnels provide an amazing, unique experience and one that has to be on your UK bucket list this summer!

"The beach was divided into two during the Victoria era. The sea pool was the ‘ladies pool’ and the neighbouring beach was for the gentlemen. Nowadays, the sea pool is for everyone! And sometimes the gentlemen beach is closed as it also operates as a wedding venue - amazing."

And people on TripAdvisor seemed equally as impressed, giving the hidden spot four and half stars. One person wrote: "Had a great lunch . Food cooked fresh . Views were amazing . Would highly recommend and will be back."

Another said: "A lovely experience and slice of history. The tunnels lead down to a beach, there are great info boards that tell you all about the swimming beaches etc."

A third penned: "Great beach, well maintained and it felt secluded. The kids loved the tunnel to gain access and the shop was available for purchases."

Hotels in Ilfracombe can be booked from £28.50pp per night. Camping pitches start from around £10 per night.

Tunnel Beaches take around two and half hours to drive to from Bristol along the M5. People can also get a train from Temple Meads to 1Ilfracombe, which takes around three hours.

It costs £3.50 adult/ £2.75 child. with opening times: April: 10am - 5pm May - Aug: 10am - 6pm Sept - Oct: 10am - 5pm Nov-March.
