Incredible footage found online shows Midlothian villages of the 1960s

Footage found online has shown some of the villages in the Midlothian area as they were in the 1960s and '70s.

Old Midlothian Memory Lane has uploaded multiple videos, some full films and others a collection of photos, showing the Woodburn and Dalkeith villages back in the day. From the buildings, cars and buses - we can see how much has changed over time.

Dalkeith, centered around Dalkeith Palace, saw a period of growth in the 1930s courtesy of a railway link with Edinburgh that transported coal, minerals and agricultural products. In one of the videos, we see the bustling burgh with cars filling the street and old fashioned buses transporting folks around.

Old Midlothian Memory Lane has been running since 2012, and curates images and stories from days gone by in the area. You can see one of their latest videos below.

One of the businesses we see in the video is Kemp's Printing Works, which stood at 100 High Street in the village. The printers operated in the area for decades, with a leaflet made in 1899 advertising their services stating they provide: "Every variety of printing."

We also see a Lipton's store, a name which today is associated with tea. Throughout the 20th Century, Lipton's had stores across the country selling tea, coffee, cocoa, chocolate, preserves (jams, marmalade, bottled fruits) and much more.

These disappeared toward the end of the 60s, which many replaced by the shiny new Presto stores.

Old Midlothian Memory Lane say the group is a place for people to reminisce of times past in Midlothian, as well as preserve our district's history. You can find out more about the group here.
