A serial sexual predator who violated his children to fulfil depraved urges will spend at least a decade in jail.
The man, who cannot be named to protect the identities of his victims, has a history of abuse spanning decades.
Over the years he has targeted his biological daughter, stepdaughter, two granddaughters and a young neighbour.
A Victorian County Court sentencing hearing on Thursday dealt with all but the grandchildren, with a judge saying: "You have torn apart families and generations and left a trail of hurt and destruction behind you."
The now-71-year-old's lengthiest period of assaults involved his stepdaughter between 1986 and 1992, from when she was aged 10 to 15.
He repeatedly and "cruelly" manipulated her prior to the sexual assaults, telling her it was the only way their family could get a swimming pool, have her school friends over or play with a go-kart.
The man raped his stepdaughter, instilled fear in her and taunted her, cautioning that if she told anyone about the sexual abuse, she would be taken away from her mother.
"You manipulated her in a cruel way for your own sexual ends," the judge said on Thursday.
"You knew that her father showed scant interest in her and that her mother was the only caring (adult in her life)."
The man only stopped assaulting his stepdaughter because she "just could not stand it anymore" and moved away to live with her grandmother, the judge said.
Even the man's biological daughter was not safe, as he directed her to expose herself to him when she visited his home between 1986 and 1990, the judge said.
The girl was humiliated and hurt by her father - the man she was meant to trust - the judge said, and his "despicable" behaviour extended to a neighbour.
Between March and June 2007 he repeatedly put his hands down the young girl's pants, targeting her when he knew her mother wasn't home, the judge said.
On one occasion, he assaulted the girl while she was home alone because her mother was at his house party.
The judge sentenced the 71-year-old to 14 years in prison with a non-parole period of 10 years.
She told him: "My impression of you is that you do not seem able to grasp the seriousness of the impact of your offending on your victims.
"You seriously abused a position of trust that you held in their lives in order to selfishly satisfy your own sexual needs."
The man had a traumatic childhood marred by physical and sexual abuse, the judge said. While he has shown signs of dementia, it is appropriate that he serve out his sentence in jail rather than a different facility for the time being.
The 71-year-old had more than a dozen charges against him, including committing gross indecency with someone under his care, two counts of incest, and several counts of indecently assaulting a person under the age of 16.
He was sentenced in 2019 for compelling his granddaughters to expose themselves.
