'In the name of God, go' Boris Johnson called to resign by veteran Tory David Davis

Boris Johnson has been told to “in the name of God,go” by one of Conservative party’s most senior MPs.

In a dramatic Commons intervention David Davis MP, one of the leading Tory Brexiteers and a former Cabinet Minister, became the most senior Tory figure to call for Johnson’s resignation.

At Prime Minister’s Questions Davis rose from the backbenches and referred to Johnson’s ‘no one told me’ excuse for attending the party in Downing Street gardens inMay 2020

Davis said: “I expect my leaders to shoulder the responsibility for the actions they take. Yesterday he did the opposite of that.”

He added: “In the name of God go”.

The question drew gasps across the chamber and as PMQs came to a close Speaker Lindsay Hoyle could be heard to say: "What a day".

The attack could open the floodgates on a Conservative backbench rebellion against Johnson with dozens of MP preparing to send in letter of no-confidence that would trigger a leadership contest.
