'In the end I decided to stay' - Shaqiri speaks out on Liverpool FC future

Xherdan Shaqiri has reiterated his commitment to Liverpool after failing to secure a move away from the club on transfer deadline day.

Having struggled for regular playing time and faced several injury setbacks during his two seasons on Merseyside, the Swiss was widely expected to depart this summer.

Interest in the 28-year-old’s signature led to him being omitted from Jurgen Klopp’s squad for games against Arsenal and Aston Villa prior to the closure of the window.

However, that ultimately failed to turn into a move away, ensuring Shaqiri will remain at Anfield until January at least.

But, when asked about his future while on international duty, the forward insisted he is happy to still be at Liverpool and is now focusing on performing at his best.

He said: “I think enough has been written and said.

“We are here to play an international game and I don’t want to talk too much about Liverpool because tomorrow is a good game and we must not forget it.

“We are playing against Germany, a good team. So I would love to answer more questions about Germany or about the international match.

“Sure, in football there is always speculation and the players think about their situations. That is completely normal.

“And of course, I have also thought about it, that is completely normal. But in the end I decided to stay there. The transfer window is now closed.

“Now I will go back to training with the team after these international matches and try to continue to perform well, which I have already proven a few times, also at Liverpool. And that is my goal.”
