Beta Film has recently sold the Ukrainian war drama series 'In Her Car' to NHK Japan, as well as to the Czech Republic, Latvia, and Slovakia, with further negotiations currently underway. This thought-provoking series, created by Eugen Tunick and Arkadii Nepytaliuk, is set to premiere on February 19th as part of a special event dedicated to the future of Ukraine in Europe, hosted by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
'In Her Car' revolves around therapist Lydia, played by Anastasia Karpenko, who finds herself caught in the midst of divorce proceedings as the war escalates in February 2022. While advised to flee the country, Lydia chooses to assist strangers by driving them to their desired destinations. Each episode focuses on a different passenger, allowing the series to tell multiple stories while following Lydia's personal journey.
Director Eugen Tunick explains that the intention was to showcase the development of Lydia's character throughout the season. Amidst the chaos, she is set on solving a mystery that has plagued her for the past eight years. As the series progresses, Lydia, who initially maintains a strong and stoic front, begins to face her own inner turmoil. This journey also exposes her vulnerability as she becomes a passenger in her own life.
Supported by ZDF, France Télévisions, and various Nordic public broadcasters, 'In Her Car' is a Starlight Media and Gaumont production. The series was made in collaboration with ZDFneo, France Télévisions, SRF Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, The Dreaming Sheep Company, SVT, DR, NRK, RUV, and YLE.
Tunick emphasizes that the aim of the series is not to present another documentary on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Instead, he sought to tell a fictional story that deals with the realities of war while incorporating elements of mythology and old fairy tales. By intertwining moments of violence with familiar folk tales, Tunick aimed to bring a touch of mysticism to the harsh reality faced by the characters.
'In Her Car' portrays the struggles of everyday people caught in the chaos of war. It highlights that even amidst a larger conflict, individuals still face personal trials and tribulations. Tunick hopes that the relatable nature of the characters' stories will resonate with international viewers and make them realize that, regardless of their location, people encounter similar challenges in their lives.
While the series serves as an engaging fictional narrative, it also serves as a reminder that the conflict in Ukraine is far from over. Tunick believes that despite the dwindling news coverage, the violence persists, and the series acts as a wake-up call to the international community. It urges viewers to continue supporting the people of Ukraine as they confront ongoing challenges.
'In Her Car' has been released at a pivotal moment, as Ukraine continues to face numerous hardships. It serves as a plea for global attention and assistance, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people. The series not only sheds light on the individual struggles faced by ordinary citizens but also emphasizes the collective fight for a better future.
As viewers embark on this gripping and thought-provoking journey with Lydia, they are invited to reflect on their own lives and the commonalities we all share. 'In Her Car' is a poignant reminder that, despite geographical distances, we are all interconnected and must support one another through the challenges we face.
