In Defence Of That One Girl Who Got Half An Avo In Her Guzman Y Gomez Burrito

Like many others this week, I was enjoying my mindless doom scroll through TikTok when suddenly my FYP became flooded with videos about some poor girl who found half an avocado in her Guzman y Gomez burrito.

At first I thought, ‘Wow, that’s rough’. But then, fate decided to throw me a curveball, and I found myself in the exact same predicament.

Picture this: It’s late, I’m exhausted after a long day, and my housemates are planning an intervention about my hanger. I’d been fooled earlier in the week by one of those meal prep TikToks (you know the ones), so I was living in hell (an ingredient household) but zero actual food.

In a moment of weakness genius, I caved and ordered from the 24-hour GYG near me.

Now, I’m not made of money, so I went for the mini Cali burrito. Times are tough, and sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices, even if it means copping a $4.50 delivery fee and a $1.35 service fee. But hey, I’m literally just a 25-year-old growing girl!

So there I was, halfway through my burrito, when suddenly — CRUNCH. What the heck? I’d bitten into a chunk of avo so big it could’ve been its own side dish. And that’s when it hit me — I was living the same nightmare as that random TikTok girl (Zara).

Is it half a full avocado? No. Was it really big though and do I like to be involved? Yes. (Image: Supplied)

The great avo debate

Now, let’s rewind a bit. This whole saga kicked off when Zara (@zarastav) posted a video of her GYG burrito, complete with half an avocado instead of guac. She captioned it, “This ruined my night, thank you,” and asked GYG Australia for an explanation.

The comments section exploded with some people calling BS, saying the burrito looked half-eaten. Others were defending Zara, sharing their own chunky avo experiences.

GYG even jumped into the fray, leaving a comment that for sure had undertones to anyone who overthinks every single interaction ever.

“Who deleted our original comment?” they wrote.

“The no bite in the avo is wild! But our crew are always here to help, read out via our website and we can get it sorted.”

What the “original comment” was, we’ll never know.

Yes, I actually did have to include the Mad Mex comment also. (Image: TikTok)

Does any of this really matter?

Now, I’ve gotten a fair bit of flak from friends, colleagues and enemies telling me I should be grateful for the extra avo. And look, I get it. In this economy, scoring half an avo is like finding an extra $20 in your pocket. But it’s the principle of the thing, you know?

If I’m shelling out for delivery fees that could’ve bought me a decent coffee in 2001, I expect my avo to be smashed into guac form.

GYG employees have sorta, kinda come to the company’s defence in the TikTok comments, explaining that the chonky avocado is probably due to Australia entering the bad avo season and the green boys being hard to mash.

“GYG worker/survivor here. I lowkey hate this place so idk why I’m defending BUT because avos are out of season all our avos are coming in extremely under rip and it’s super difficult to mash the guac,” wrote one commenter.

“Sometimes even our strongest employees can’t mash” the avocados, said another.

So true bestie, so true.

PEDESTRIAN.TV reached out to Zara to see if we went to the same GYG and could bond over our shared trauma, but she hasn’t replied. Maybe she’s too busy enjoying her newfound avo wealth.

As for GYG, they declined to comment but did encourage me to reach out to their guest experience team and I ABSOLUTELY will be.

In this economy, I’ll be taking all the potentially free burritos I can get thank you very much!!
