McCowan came on for the final 16 minutes as he won the first Premiership of his career.
Celtic have won the league title at Tannadice on several occasions over the years, and the last time they did so before Saturday, McCowan was in the stands watching as a fan.
The midfielder revealed post-match that he was in the crowd in 2022 as Ange Postecoglou's side drew 1-1 to secure the 2021/22 Premiership: "It's a bit surreal if I'm honest," he said [Celtic TV].
"I don't really know what to do with myself because I've never been here before!
"It credits the hard work from the boys the full season.
"I don't think I ever got this far in my dreams. I would never have thought I'd have been here. In 2022, I was actually in that stand celebrating as well. It's nice to come and be full-circle and it's nice to win it on my ex-rivals' pitch."
McCowan signed for Celtic last summer from United's city rivals, Dundee, for just £1m.
He has since made 37 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring six goals and providing seven assists, proving his worth as an adept squad player.
Celtic now turn their attention to Ibrox and the last Glasgow derby of the season after wrapping up the title on Saturday.
