Josip Juranovic took the plaudits from the German media for his performance against Ajax that helped Union Berlin pick up a creditable draw in Amsterdam.
But the impressive full-back couldn't believe it when asked if he was surprised with his team's performance - insisting "we can stand up to anyone." Juranovic has shared the minutes with his captain Christopher Trimmel in the Bundesliga since his move from Celtic but with his 35-year-old skipper suspended, he was brought in for the Europa League first leg clash with Ajax. He helped shut the Dutch giants out with as his team earned a 0-0 draw away from home and Der Tagesspiegel noted he "impressively demonstrated his qualities."
The 27-year-old also started in the win over Leipzig at the weekend as high-flying Union have won four from four in the league since his arrival. So when asked if he was "surprised" by how well his team played, it's reported he "responded with incredulity," saying:"We won in Leipzig at the weekend and they're playing in the Champions League. We can stand up to anyone!"
Juranovic was also named as Union's best player on the pitch by WhoScored, narrowly losing out on overall best player to Ajax stopper Geronimo Rulli. He will be hoping for another start against Schalke at the weekend while he may expect to hold down his spot for the second leg against Ajax in a week's time.
