Jaden Akins declared for the NBA Draft, while maintaining his eligibility to possibly return to MSU. That decision was somewhat expected, but the news still carries a shock factor to it.
Akins presence is a big one for MSU, and the impact of him staying or leaving is somewhat massive, especially for the 2023-24 season.
While Spartan fans would love for a return, let’s walk through the scenario that he does stay in the NBA Draft.

Rotation
Akins has a stranglehold on one of the three back court spots in the starting rotation, and rightfully so, but if he were to leave, where does that leave the Spartans?
It leaves the Spartans very thin, and young, at the 3 spot. My guess would be Malik Hall would be thrusted into the starting small forward spot, while only having true freshman Gehrig Normand and Coen Carr behind him.
Transfer Portal
Tom Izzo isn’t the biggest fan of the transfer portal, but would he be willing to go to it for a veteran 3 if he needs to? I think so.
As alluded above, the Spartans will be very thin at the 3 position next year if Akins does not return. While everyone is high on the incoming freshman, does Izzo want to wager a whole season them?
If Akins were to leave, I think MSU would be hard pressed to dip into the transfer portal for a veteran wing.
Chance at history
Many are high on Michigan State heading into 2023-24, and for good reason. The Spartans have a chance to do something special with the roster they are returning.
Akins, while very talented, hasn’t quite unlocked his full superstar potential at MSU. The sophomore to junior year transition is a big one, and one I believe would greatly benefit Akins.
MSU has a chance at history next year, but keeping Akins around is a big part of it.
