The 2022-23 college golf season is complete, which means it’s time for postseason awards.
A pair of veteran teams took home the trophies from Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, where the championships were contested for a third and final time of a three-year deal. In the individual competitions, there were big come-from-behind victories on both sides, as well.
However, when it comes to the Coach of the Year conversation, there are two who stood out among the rest, and they’ve been selected as the Golfweek 2022-23 Coaches of the Year.
Golfweek selects men’s and women’s All-America teams and honorable mention selections, as well as Players of the Year and Coaches of the Year.
Here’s a look at Golfweek‘s 2022-23 Coaches of the Year and a look at past winners.
Men's Coach of the Year: Mike Small, Illinois
What Illinois did under Mike Small this year is nothing short of impressive. Although the Illini didn’t come away with the national championship, in 13 stroke-play events this season, Illinois lost to only nine teams. That’s right: only nine other men’s college golf teams beat the Illini in stroke play all year. Small’s team captured the Big 10 Championship and six additional tournament titles and finished tied for second in the stroke-play portion of the national championship.
Women's Coach of the Year: Laurie Gibbs, Pepperdine
This year was Laurie Gibbs’ 30th season at the helm guiding the Pepperdine women’s golf team, and it was one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Waves, which didn’t receive a vote in the WCGA preseason coaches poll, not only qualified for the NCAA Championship but also made match play for the first time in program history, bowing out against Stanford in the quarterfinals. Pepperdine won six times in 2022-23, including capturing the West Coast Conference title and sharing medalist honors at the NCAA San Antonio Regional.
