A daycare worker in Illinois is accused of child endangerment after allegedly punishing a 4-year-old boy by placing him in a freezing alley and later in a trash can.

The alleged punishment unfolded in Homewood, Illinois, around 9 p.m. on January 13, at The Learning Lab daycare on Dixie Highway, according to Patch.

That night Anna Petrou, 58, reportedly forced the toddler outside into a 19-degree alley for 20 seconds before bringing him back inside and placing him in an empty garbage can as punishment.

The boy's parents were alerted later that evening and contacted the authorities after reviewing surveillance footage.

Police charged Petrou with a misdemeanor count of endangering the life of a child on January 23. She was then processed and released pending a court appearance.

Petrou will face a future court date, where further details about the incident and potential disciplinary measures may emerge. Authorities are also likely to investigate the daycare's role and response to the incident.

The daycare has not yet publicly commented on the matter.
