U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that an Ecuadorean illegal immigrant, Christian Geovanny Inga-Landi, was charged with raping a 13-year-old girl in New York City. In June 2021, Inga-Landi was caught by Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas, and subsequently released into the U.S. with a future court date.
In February 2022, an immigration judge ordered Inga-Landi, 25, to be deported, but this order was never carried out. Inga-Landi is part of ICE's nondetained docket, which currently stands at 7.4 million cases, with each ICE officer managing an average of 7,000 cases.
On June 18, the New York City Police Department arrested Inga-Landi as a suspect for the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in Queens. He is facing multiple charges in connection with the incident.
Police identified Inga-Landi as the primary suspect through surveillance video and tips from the public. He was apprehended after a group of neighbors recognized him from a wanted poster and held him until police arrived.
Following his arrest, Enforcement and Removal Operations New York City lodged an immigration detainer against Inga-Landi's release.
Prior to the recent charges, Inga-Landi had a history of low-level offenses, including subway fare evasion and public drinking. He was also involved in a domestic violence incident where no charges were filed, and had an unspecified arrest in Texas.
