An illegal immigrant from Honduras is facing criminal charges after allegedly assaulting a 13-year-old girl in a Florida park earlier this month. The incident took place near Okeeheelee Park on January 2.
According to sources, the suspect is described as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old who does not speak English. Detectives were able to track down and arrest Santo Martinez Varela on January 11. His identity was confirmed through a DNA search warrant.
Varela reportedly crossed the Mexican border from Honduras in 2023 without any prior contact with law enforcement. He then traveled to West Palm Beach, where the assault occurred.
Currently, Varela is being held without bail at Palm Beach County Jail on charges of kidnapping and sexual assault. He appeared before a judge on Sunday, as indicated by online records.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office issued a statement on social media, warning potential offenders that they will be pursued and brought to justice. The department emphasized their commitment to ensuring that individuals who commit such heinous crimes face the consequences of their actions.
