Ilkay Gundogan surprises refugees with tickets to Man City's title-clinching fixtures

Ilkay Gundogan surprised three refugee children with tickets to Manchester City's final games of the season as they clinched the Premier League title.

City were crowned champions of England for the fourth time in five years on Sunday and they did so in dramatic fashion on a remarkable final day. Pep Guardiola's side were staring down the barrel of a stunning slip at the final hurdle as they went two goals down to Aston Villa, opening the door for Liverpool to get their hands on the trophy.

However, the Blues boss introduced Gundogan in the second half who went on to change the game. The German scored City's first before a rocket from Rodri equalised and then grabbed the winner late on to spark jubilant scenes at the Etihad.

In attendance for the game, as well as the penultimate home game against Newcastle two weeks previous, were three refugee boys who had been invited by Gundogan to enjoy watching their team in action. The boys, aged between 8-14, were all forced to flee their homes in Syria and Sudan with their families and have been safely relocated to Manchester.

Gundogan, who has been supporting the UN Refugee Agency (UNRA) since early 2021 by raising funds and awareness, invited the boys to visit the Etihad Stadium and the City Academy earlier this year, where the midfielder accompanied them and offered the opportunity to ask questions.

There were more surprises to come as Gundogan gave them all tickets for the final two games of the season where they got to watch their host scoring the title-deciding goal and the incredible celebrations that followed.
