Ilkay Gundogan has made a surprising return to Manchester City, rejoining the club after a year-long stint at Barcelona. The former Germany midfielder completed his move to City on a free transfer and signed a season-long deal, with the option for an additional season. Gundogan, who served as captain during Manchester City's triumphant 2022-23 campaign, played a pivotal role in the team's Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League treble.
Having initially joined City in 2016 as Pep Guardiola's first signing, Gundogan quickly established himself as a key player with notable performances and crucial goals. His return to City comes as a late addition in the transfer window, following his departure from Barcelona due to the club's financial constraints under new coach Hansi Flick.
Primarily an attacking central midfielder, Gundogan also provides cover for holding midfielder Rodri and is well-versed in Guardiola's tactical approach. He will compete for a spot in City's midfield alongside the likes of Rodri, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Mateo Kovacic, and Phil Foden.
Gundogan's move back to City has allowed Barcelona to pursue new signings, including midfielder Dani Olmo. The Catalan club boasts depth in creative midfield positions with players like Pedri González, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin López, and Gavi Páez.
Following his retirement from international duty, Gundogan is set to make his return to City's lineup, potentially featuring in the upcoming Premier League match against Ipswich at Etihad Stadium. His last appearance for City saw him lift the Champions League trophy after a victory over Inter Milan in June last year.
