Ilkay Gundogan makes Liverpool transfer admission as Man City contract ticks down

Ilkay Gundogan has ruled out swapping Manchester City for their grudge rivals Liverpool next season.

The German international is the most high-profile senior star at City whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign. He has yet to agree to an extension to extend his stay at the club, who he joined back in 2016.

And then has led to a flurry of speculation over his future. One of the clubs perhaps surprisingly linked with a move is Liverpool. The Reds have been City's chief title rivals in recent years and despite having plenty of admiration for Jurgen Klopp, who he worked under at previous club Borussia Dortmund, Gundogan cannot realistically see himself swapping the Etihad for Anfield.

Speaking to German media outlet Kicker, the 32-year-old was asked about the prospect of a switch to Merseyside and replied: "I think I can rule out that happening!

"Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Kloppo. But I’ve been at City for a few years now. And now as City captain to rival Liverpool? No, I can not imagine [it]."

He also spoke about how he was "relaxed" over the fact his contract is in the final few months.

He added: "I don’t know if it has anything to do with age but I’m pretty relaxed about it. Even if it doesn’t sound like much anymore, the summer of 2023 still feels so far away. I’m not really worried about that at the moment."
