Ilkay Gundogan issues update on Man City future after contract expires next summer

Ilkay Gundogan is in no rush to extend his Manchester City contract, but can see a future that involves him staying at the Etihad past next summer.

Gundogan, 31, is out of contract at the end of next season, which will take his time at City to seven years. The German says he is relaxed about his contract situation as he offered hope to City fans wanting to see him stay beyond June 2023.

City have tied down a number of key players to extensions in the last 12 months, including Joao Cancelo, Ederson, Ruben Dias, John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne. After Fernandinho, who is out of contract at the end of the season Gundogan's deal is the next to expire among the senior players.

Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus are also out of contract in 2023, with City usually looking to secure extensions in good time to avoid the risk of a player running down their deal to leave on a free transfer.

Speaking to SportBild, Gundogan said: "I like life, love the club and feel extremely comfortable. That's why I can imagine staying beyond 2023.

"I still have a year's contract and I'm relatively relaxed. I'll let it come to me."

Gundogan, who is one game off 150 Premier League appearances, also spoke about City's chances of winning the title ahead of a strong challenge from Liverpool, with the midfielder calling upon City's experience to give them an edge.

He said: "The good thing for us is that it's not an unfamiliar situation. It's like two years ago, so we should be able to deal with the pressure that Liverpool are trying to build up. We know we're a very strong team, extremely have good players.

"And that we still play against them at home. Everything is open: it will be a hot dance. But we play football for that.

“We have enough quality and the experience of the last few years, to be fully there, especially in the final phase of the season”.
