Ilia Topuria is one of the most talked about fighters in the UFC right now. The unbeaten MMA star is the reigning UFC Featherweight Champion, and has admitted to an unusual pre-fight ritual that helps him cut weight the day before he hits the scales.
Ilia Topuria Reveals Strange Pre-Fight Ritual
Despite having had just eight fights since signing with Dana White and the UFC, Ilia Topuria is a name on everybody’s lips right now. Not only is the Spaniard unbeaten in his MMA career, but he is now the reigning and defending UFC Featherweight Champion.
The 27-year-old won the UFC Featherweight Title at UFC 298 in February, knocking out 145-pound legend Alexander Volkanovski to win the belt in just his seventh UFC fight. Last time out, ‘El Matador’ then defended his UFC Title for the very first time against another 145-pound stalwart and former champion in Max Holloway.
In his last two fight, Ilia Topuria has knocked out arguably two of the best featherweight MMA fighters to ever grace the octagon. Quite the achievement.
As one of the biggest stars in the UFC right now, millions of eyes will be on Topuria each and every time he fights. Not only will Ilia Topuria have the eyes of the world on him inside the cage, but outside of his life as a professional fighter too.
That being said, in a recent interview with former UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping, the 145-pound UFC king revealed one pre-fight ritual that he does the day before he weighs in. Topuria has revealed one of his biggest secrets, that he actually drinks alcohol the day before the weigh-ins.
Ilia Topuria Drinks ‘Half A Litre’ Of Wine Day Before Weigh-Ins
Ilia Topuria rise in the UFC has been one of the most impressive in recent memory, given the sheer speed of his destruction of the featherweight division. The 27-year-old Spanish-Georgian fighter is relatively unorthodox when it comes to fighting, and it’s fair to say the same can be said for his pre-fight approach.
Topuria revealed in an interview with Michael Bisping on his YouTube channel that he has a method that helps him to cut weight prior to the weigh-ins a day before he fights. His unusual method of weight cutting involves drinking half a litre of wine:
“I drink half a litre of wine, and you know that on Thursday it’s a very hard night for every fighter because it’s a day before weigh-ins so it’s hard to sleep, it’s hard to rest, but I drink half a litre of wine,” revealed the UFC Featherweight Champion.
“I get very buzzed and I have such a great time with everybody, we change the atmosphere, you know, we don’t think about the fighting. Then I go to sleep like a baby and I wake up in the morning 2lbs less because of dehydration.
“Everyone’s drunk, everyone’s happy, we have a party. Sometimes it’s even better to be mentally good than physically good,” the Spaniard told Bisping.
Ilia Topuria‘s unique approach to weight making certainly hasn’t caused any harm thusfar. As the single best 145-pound fighter in the world and one of the best on the entire UFC roster, more fighters might follow in his footsteps for their upcoming fights from now on!
