A man has been arrested after a staff member was left fighting for his life during an “unprovoked” attack at Ilford station.
Officers were called to the Elizabeth line station at around 8.49pm on Wednesday following reports of a serious assault.
Paramedics and London's Air Ambulance also attended, and a man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.
A station worker at Ilford told the Metro his colleague was attacked by a man and fell and hit his hed.
He said: “He’s a really nice guy and we are just hoping he’s okay. It can be dangerous when people take things out on us.
“I don’t know why the man attacked him but it was unprovoked.”
The British Transport Police said the victim remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
His next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.
A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent.
Superintendent Nick Sedgemore said: “There is absolutely no place for violence on the railway network.
“I would like to reassure the public this is an isolated incident and a 28-year-old man is now in custody. We are not seeking anyone else in connection.
“We are working at pace on this investigation and continue to support the family of the victim.”
