'If you ask them' - Ian Burchnall backs Notts County fans after Paul Hurst comments

Ian Burchnall believes Notts County fans will produce a sizzling atmosphere in their play-off showdown with Grimsby and says the Mariners would have liked home advantage in the quarter-final.

The two clubs meet on Monday night as they battle for a return to the Football League with the winners set to book a trip to Wrexham in the semis.

Notts ensured the game would be played at Meadow Lane having pipped Grimsby to fifth in the table to secure home advantage.

But Mariners boss Paul Hurst has said that being in front of an expectant home crowd can sometimes make fans edgy which then transmits to the players.

However, Notts head coach Burchnall maintains Notts have had no problem performing in the big games this season and fully expects a packed Meadow Lane to rise to the occasion.

"I think really if you ask them (Grimsby) if they could play home or away, they are going to want to play at home," he said.

"But if they're away they will look for what the positives are in that and I get it.

"But, at the same time, I don't really see our crowd being too anxious in all the big games.

"Our crowd felt more anxious when we've played smaller teams, and we haven't had it all of our own way.

"And then they're a bit more anxious because the expectation just to win is there.

"I think our crowd know that Grimsby are going to have part of this game because they're a good team.

"So I think our crowd accept that and then gets behind us even more. I don't really see that because in all the big games that we've had here, the crowd has been with us all the way so I don't quite see it the same.

"But I understand his thoughts because we always say it when we go away that you want to turn the crowd against the team that you're playing against. That's always a mindset you can go with."

Notts have been in training all week as they build up to Monday's game which is heading for a five-figure crowd with tickets continuing to be snapped up.

The Magpies will have a fully-fit squad from which to choose with Kyle Cameron and Richard Brindley's return proving a huge boost to Burchnall's defensive options.

Both sides have a win each this season with Notts beating Grimsby at Blundell Park in the early stages of the campaign while the Mariners gained revenge with a 2-1 victory at Meadow Lane.

And Grimsby boss Hurst believes he has spotted a change in Burchnall's tactics.

"I think I know a high percentage of it (the team). We will look at it and the opposition," Hurst told Grimsby Live.

"I'll look at the two games against them and I've seen a few changes and a change of tactics from them against us at home and then 20 minutes or so when they were on top in their home game and then we were on top for the remainder of that game and we won that.

"We've both had one win apiece and both had good spells in those games. As you'd expect, it's good opposition."
