Idrissa Gueye suffers huge blow ahead of potential England World Cup clash

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye will miss Senegal's first World Cup knockout tie in 20 years after he was booked during his country's 2-1 victory over Ecuador on Tuesday.

A penalty from Ismailia Sarr and a crisp first-time volley from defender Kalidou Koulibaly either side of Moises Caicedo's equaliser was enough for the 2022 African Cup of Nations winners to seal progression into the first knockout round as runners-up of Group A.

Senegal will face the winners of Group B on Sunday afternoon, which is expected to be England, unless Gareth Southgate's side are heavily defeated by Wales in Al Rayyan on Tuesday evening.

However, Gueye will now miss the potential encounter after he was booked in the second half of the Lions of Teranga's victory over their Group A counterparts. It was his second booking of the finals thus far, which means he will now serve a one-game suspension for Senegal's next fixture.

Players who are booked twice before the quarter-final stages are automatically handed a one-match suspension at the FIFA World Cup. That means the Blues midfielder will only feature for his nation again at the Qatar finals if they are able to negotiate their way into the final eight.

Gueye, who rejoined Everton during the summer after spending three years at Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain, was set to make his 100th appearance for Senegal during the first knockout round prior to his immediate suspension.

His absence is the latest blow for manager Aliou Cissé, who lost former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane on the eve of the tournament after he suffered a long-term leg injury while playing for Bayern Munich.
