'Idiotic' Rangers vs Celtic coin-throwing condemned as SPFL call for 'severe' action

The SPFL have condemned the shocking coin-throwing incidents during the Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic.

A statement from the league body blasted "idiotic, criminal acts" at Ibrox after Arne Engels was struck by a coin with Celtic staff also targeted during the match on January 2.

The SPFL have demanded "severe" action must be taken against those responsible with football banning orders cited as punishment.

(Image: Sky Sports) An SPFL statement read: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we fully support any steps taken to identify those responsible for such idiotic, criminal acts.

“The dangers of so-called supporters throwing such items onto the pitch are obvious and anyone found guilty of such disgraceful conduct must be dealt with severely by the courts, including the imposition of football banning orders.

“We await the match delegate’s report, and we would urge any fans with relevant information to contact Police Scotland.”

“The club can confirm it will assist Police Scotland with their investigation.”

Referee Don Robertson could be seen handing a coin to a security officer at the side of the pitch in the closing stages of the match after Engels was hit.

The match official checked on the player - who was alright to continue - before the coin was bagged as evidence by a Police Scotland officer at the side of the park.
