IDF Kills Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp Mayor In Gaza Strike

Palestinians evacuate the site of Israeli strikes on houses in Maghazi refugee camp

On Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out a strike in central Gaza that resulted in the death of the mayor of the Al-Maghazi refugee camp. Both the IDF and Hamas confirmed the incident.

Hamas condemned the strike as a 'cowardly assassination' of Mr. Hatem Saleh Al-Ghamri, the mayor of Al-Maghazi. The militant group accused Israeli warplanes of bombing the building of the Joint Services Council of the central governorate's municipalities without warning. Hamas labeled the attack as a 'war crime' that violated international laws protecting civilian figures.

The IDF, on the other hand, stated that its fighter jet targeted and 'eliminated the terrorist,' identifying Al-Ghamri as a member of the Hamas military wing involved in launching projectiles within the Maghazi Battalion of the Central Camps.

The Al-Maghazi refugee camp is situated in the central region of Gaza, south of Wadi Gaza, a significant waterway that divides the northern and southern parts of the territory. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), the camp is characterized by narrow alleys and housed approximately 33,000 residents before the recent conflict. The camp covers a relatively small area of about 0.6 square kilometers (0.2 square miles).
