A teen mother in Idaho was arrested for putting a dead baby in a Safe Haven Baby Box, which only protects parents who surrender living, unharmed newborns under 30 days old.

Angela N. Newberry, 18, left her deceased infant in a Safe Haven Baby Box at Grove Creek Medical Center in Blackfoot, Idaho, and the baby was found on Oct. 13, 2024, according to a Blackfoot Police Department's Facebook page.

The boxes are meant to allow parents to surrender their unharmed newborns within 30 days of their birth without legal repercussions, but anyone who leaves a harmed or deceased baby is not protected.

Local police worked with the Blackfoot - Bingham Joint Detective Division for two months and discovered it was Newberry of Twin Falls who left the baby. She was arrested and charged with a felony for failing to report a death to law enforcement officials and the coroner, according to police.
