An Idaho man is facing charges for allegedly stealing two canoes and falsely claiming to be on the run from law enforcement, according to a report.

The incident started early Wednesday near Hayden Lake when officers from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of a stolen bicycle.

After investigating the matter further, officials discovered the suspect, Ryan Irwin, 40, who tried to mislead them.

Irwin then proceeded to steal a canoe from a nearby home, which he used to evade arrest and paddle to another location. There, he stole a second canoe, according to KTVB.

Irwin was apprehended after marine deputies intervened. Investigators recovered and returned all the stolen property.

Meanwhile, Irwin was taken into custody and booked on charges of grand theft and resisting arrest.
