Icy reception: Workman accidentally freezes daughter's phone in Milton Keynes ice rink

If you have ever made a mammoth blunder at work, spare a thought for the workman who accidentally froze his daughter’s iPhone into a Christmas ice rink in Milton Keynes.

As he worked on setting up the temporary ice rink, the man – who hasn’t been named – placed his daughter’s bright pink iPhone by the side of the rink. Unbeknownst to him, when the 60,000 litres of water needed to fill the structure were poured in, the phone somehow fell in along with it. It’s unknown if the phone fell in by mistake or if a colleague was playing a prank.

Speaking to the BBC, Rob Cook, the director of Ice Leisure, said the workman had borrowed his daughter’s phone after misplacing his own. “Unfortunately, there is no way we will be able to get the phone out of the ice now,” he said.

“If we were to dig it out, it would affect the structure of the ice so it will remain entombed for the next two months.”

The phone was discovered frozen in the rink after workers heard the ping of a Snapchat notification the next day.

While skaters at the Willen On Ice experience will be able to enjoy the funny sight, the workman revealed that he was skating on thin ice when he shared the news with his daughter. “My daughter wasn’t happy at the start, especially as she has just bought a new phone case,” he said.

“But after a short time – and the promise of a temporary replacement phone – she cooled off!”
