Iconic Wickerman Festival sculpture near Dundrennan restored to former glory

An iconic feature on the Stewartry coast has been restored to its former glory.

A special sculpture marked the old site of the Wickerman Festival which used to be held at East Kirkcarswell near Dundrennan.

It was originally put in place for the festival but has become damaged in recent years due to the weather and animals.

But it is now back to its best after owner Patsy Gilroy asked Auchencairn artist Trevor Leat to carry out some work. She said: “He’s been very busy so that’s probably why it ended up looking more like a scarecrow than a wicker boy!

“It’s been damaged by the wind and the birds and sometimes the sheep nibble around its legs.

“It usually lasts five to eight years between repairs and I had to decide whether to keep it I felt it was time for extensive repairs.

“It’s become quite a prominent and iconic feature.”
