Deciding how to decorate your bedroom can be a stressful task when you're a child or a teenager, but in the 2000s, one brand made it easy for girls to choose how to decorate their rooms thanks to an iconic character.
Bang on the Door ’s ‘Groovy Chick’ range was first introduced in the UK in the 1990s, with many children and teens across Liverpool quickly becoming obsessed with it. The collection was based on a character with short blonde hair who wore funky clothes and often had a flower and sunglasses perched on her head.
Groovy Chick was dubbed the “tween queen” and featured on a variety of products which were often purple, alongside flower and heart patterns. The range included bedding, wallpaper, curtains, alarm clocks, inflatable chairs, beanbags, and much, much more…

If you were a child or teenager in the 2000s, it’s likely you owned at least one Groovy Chick item. Some girls would take it a tad too far, though, with many having their entire bedroom covered from floor to ceiling with the range.
If you weren’t the person who had a Groovy Chick themed bedroom, we can guarantee one of your friends did. Some may recall having sleepovers in Groovy Chick bedrooms and waking up to a sea of bright purple.
Others may remember turning up to school with a new Groovy Chick school bag and being immediately annoyed when several others rocked up with the exact same one. Another popular item was the Groovy Chick diary which many would scribble their deepest, darkest secrets in with their matching pencil.
Groovy Chick was so popular in the 2000s that it was nominated for ‘Character of the Year’. Various other characters were also created to join Groovy Chick on her adventures. Called ‘Groovy Friends’, the group included Hey Gorgeous, Pop Princess and Curly Girly.
Bang on the Door, which was founded in the 1980s in North London, is still in business, although many of its iconic Groovy Chick and Groovy Friends products are no longer available.
Groovy Chick recently made a comeback when the company collaborated with high street giant Primark. Don’t get your hopes up too much, as unfortunately the only items available are pairs of socks featuring the iconic character - that’s better than nothing, though!
