Iconic Edinburgh video store captured frozen in time through stunning images

Locals have recalled the iconic video store that served a local working class community in the 80s and 90s after seeing some amazing throwback pictures.

Castle Video was open on Niddrie Mains Drive from 1988 to 1993 bringing videos, posters and other media content to the kids, teens and families of Craigmillar and Niddrie.

Alexander Brown who grew up in Niddrie but now lives in Musselburgh owned three video shops in the eighties around the East Lothian and east Edinburgh area.

The once-local businessman shared several pictures which give an incredible insight into life in the 80s and transport you back to simpler times.

Looking into the main street store, you can see posters advertising several films standing in the window of the local shop along with a huge LCD sign reading, "video hire."

In the amazing images shelves of thick plastic VCR's can be seen as big signs labelling the different genres hang above. In one image Alex's proud wife stands sporting a funky blue and pink shell suit with loud patterned sleeves and a matching pink scrunchie in her hair.

Famous faces also used to visit the popular store with Edinburgh boxer Ken Buchanan pictured standing outside with owner Alexander. Celtic and Scotland legend Danny McGrain also said to frequent the video shop when in the capital.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Alexander said: "I had Castle Video for five years, and I had three video shops in total. One in Dalkeith Road, one in Niddrie Mill and this was the first one I opened out of the three.

"The first video shop at 30 Niddrie Mains Drive opened on the 6th of June 1988. It was my mum's birthday.

"I got the name from Craigmillar Castle as I lived in the Avenue with my granny Brown for a while when I was around 11 years old, and I could see this castle from my window. I still like to see the Castle to this day, as it brings back very happy memories."

He continued: "I have very happy memories from that time with my wife Monica, my kids Zander and Gemma, my dad and my loyal dog, Rebel.

"Castle Video was visited by Danny McGrain and Ken Buchanan during its first year open."
