Iconic Edinburgh Chinese takeaway McChans tease new restaurant within shopping centre

Legendary Edinburgh Chinese takeaway McChans have teased fans that they could be opening a new store within a busy shopping centre on the outskirts of the city centre.

Having ceased trading from their iconic takeaway food trailer at Fort Kinnaird retail park in 2019, McChans then moved a little further down the road and opened a larger restaurant on Niddrie Mains Road, where customers could dine in, order and take away.

With their oriental classics loved by shoppers and foodies on the fringes of the city, you often saw a queue of people waiting for their orders at the shopping park, where the brand made a name for itself.

Now, customers have been teased by McChans' latest post on Facebook, with a picture of Ocean Terminal shopping centre, twinned with the caption: "Watch this space." The likely answer to this would seem that the much-loved business are about to expand further and open another takeaway in one of the busiest shopping destinations in the city.

McChans don't post often on Facebook. You only have to scroll for a few seconds before finding their closing down post from 2019. So, with this in mind, it fans of the popular Chinese takeaway are probably not far wrong by assuming an expansion is on the horizon.

As of 24 hours after the post was put up on Monday night (August 1) it has gained over 150 comments, all from fans that are dying to get a taste of their favourite Edinburgh Chinese takeaway, with some hoping that travelling miles out the road to do so will no longer be an obstacle to overcome.

Many will know that Ocean Terminal can no longer be considered the attraction that it once was. With that being said, a huge revamp of the 20-year-old centre and the addition of several apartment blocks nearby could see the whole area, in the north of the city, given a new lease of life once more.

Part of the centre is set to be demolished in years to come, with the addition of new modern features and retail outlets, as well as swish apartment blocks and new access links to the city centre, with the Trams to Newhaven project set for completion in 2023.

So, if the news of McChans expanding and growing their business even more in Edinburgh is true, it seems like they have chosen a very wise and high-reward location to do so. You can check out McChans' Facebook page for possible future updates here.
