Icicles are lit up in the town of Yokoze in Saitama Prefecture, creating a wondrous scene that will be illuminated through Feb. 23. Local volunteers spent a month spraying water over an area 30 meters high and 200 meters wide. The practice began in 2014 in a bid to draw tourists to the area in the winter, and the icicles are said to be exceptionally resplendent because this year has been particularly cold. The icicles are illuminated on weekends and national holidays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m this month and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in February. Visitors need to make reservations online for entry before 7 p.m. and can freely enter the area from 7 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Entry is limited to 500 people per hour.
