Iceland volcano eruption ‘could last for months’ - Tech and Science Daily podcast

The Icelandic Met Office has warned that more vents are expected to open as the volcanic eruption in the southwest of Iceland continues.

Three out of five vents are still active after the volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula started erupting on Monday, spewing lava and smoke over 100m into the air.

Experts are warning that the eruption could last several months - which has left residents of the evacuated town of Grindavik unable to return to their homes for Christmas. The country’s meteorological office has also issued an air pollution warning for the capital, Reykjavik.

Rescue efforts after the earthquake in north-west China are coming to an end. The 6.2 magnitude quake hit Gansu province on Monday night, killing at least 131 people and injuring nearly 1,000. Authorities said on Wednesday they were wrapping up operations and would now focus on treating the injured, and helping those who lost their homes.
