Iceland to shut TWO more stores this month - after string of closures this year

Another two Iceland stores will be shutting for good this month after a string of closures over the last few months.

The popular frozen food chain announced earlier this year that it was to shut down several of its sites.

Some of the first locations to go came in February which saw the Mill Lane store in Bromsgrove and the Chineham Shopping Centre in Basingstoke shut.

Four more supermarket sites then closed in March.

The latest closure was Iceland's Flint store in Wales - which shut its doors on May 27.

The next affected location will be the Iceland branch in Hitchin town centre which will close its doors on Saturday, June 10 at 4pm.

The next store affected is the chain's Beccles branch in Suffolk, which is set to close on June 17 with the company blaming a decline in business at the store.

The Beccles site first opened in 2013 and was the frozen food retailer's 800 store in the UK.

After the closure in 11 days' time, Beccles shoppers will have to travel to Lowestoft to access Iceland products.

You can find your nearest store using the locator tool on the Iceland website.

Once the Beccles site goes, the number of Iceland closures this year will total 11.

An Iceland spokesperson said: "We can confirm the Beccles store will close on June 17

“Across Iceland Foods and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over 1,000 stores, so continually review the retail experience offered to our customers.

"While this means we make a small number of closures every year, we are proud to have opened significantly more new stores and business is trading strongly.

It's not clear at the moment whether more branches will follow suit later in the year.

In a statement about the closures, an Iceland spokesperson said: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

"We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

"The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares."

Iceland opened its first Iceland Local store this year in Wolverhampton.

The site opened on a Texaco garage forecourt in Fallings Park and also features a Costcutter.

Iceland has more than 800 branches and 153 Food Warehouse stores across the UK, and last year opened 24 new branches.
