Iceland to close three more stores in a matter of days - see if your local is going

Supermarket chain Iceland is to close three stores in a matter of days.

The first shop is located on South Street in Newport, Isle of Wight and will shut this Saturday (March 25).

The reason behind the Isle of Wight store closure is reportedly down to its rent going up, combined with a decrease in sales.

The second Iceland shop to close is on St Catherine’s Place in Bedminster, Bristol, and will also shut this Saturday (March 25).

But shoppers in Bristol won’t go without, as there is a second Iceland in the shopping centre, which is earmarked for a major redevelopment.

The third Iceland shop to close is in the Deiniol Centre in Bangor, Wales and will shut on Monday (March 27).

After this shuts, a new Food Warehouse, which is part of the Iceland group, will open in the city the following day.

The Iceland stores closing are:

  • South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight - March 25
  • St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol - March 25
  • Deiniol Centre, Bangor - March 27

The latest closures come after Iceland shut its shop in the White Rose Centre in Rhyl on March 14.

Iceland now has over 800 stores and The Food Warehouse has over 150.

An Iceland spokesperson said: "Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse we have a portfolio of over UK 1,000 stores, and our retail estate has grown by nearly 200 stores over the last ten years.

"We typically open more than 20 new stores each year, creating many new jobs and contributing to the growth of local economies.

"At the same time, we continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

“The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares."

Iceland isn't the only business closing stores.

B&M is closing its Queens Drive Retail Park shop in Kilmarnock, Scotland, plus its shop in Boucher Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland, on March 26.

B&M will also shut its Bristol shop in Broadwalk Shopping Centre on March 29.

M&S will close its Fenchurch Street store in London on March 31.
