Iceland has opened a new convenience store - with plans to open more over the next few months.
The new shop concept, called Iceland Local, is located on a Texaco garage forecourt in Fallings Park, Wolverhampton and opened on March 31.
The site also features a Costcutter and is operated by SGN Retail.
The majority of the chilled and ambient products are supplied by Costcutter but there is also a frozen section with Iceland goods.
Iceland products you’ll find in stores include its own-label range and items from its partnerships with Slimming World and Harry Ramsden’s.
Iceland international and wholesale director Justin Addison said: “Iceland Local will make our unique range of frozen, chilled, fresh and grocery products available to customers in a completely new type of location, complementing our 1,000 company-owned Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores on the nation’s high streets and retail parks.
“Iceland Local gives customers an exciting new opportunity to pick up our food while they are refuelling, and we already have plans to roll out the concept with further openings in the months ahead.”
He added that Iceland already has plans to roll out the concept with “further openings in the months ahead”.
We’ve asked Iceland if they have any locations pinned down yet and we’ll update this article when we know more.
This isn't the first time Iceland has tested a convenience store concept, having opened its first Iceland Swift store in Newcastle in March 2021.
The frozen foods specialist opened its fifth Swift store in London in August 2022.
But in not-so-good news for Iceland customers, the supermarket recently closed half a dozen stores across the UK in February and March.
The stores and their closure dates are listed below:
- Mill Lane, Bromsgrove - February 25
- Chineham Shopping Centre, Basingstoke - February 25
- White Rose Centre, Rhyl - March 14
- South Street, Newport, Isle of Wight - March 25
- St Catherine’s Place, Bedminster, Bristol - March 25
- Deiniol Centre, Bangor - March 27
Iceland has around 800 stores and its sister chain The Food Warehouse has around 150, so overall the chain has around 1,000 shops under these brands.
Iceland previously told The Mirror it is trading "very strongly" and over the last financial year it has opened 24 new stores in the UK.
It "typically" opens around 20 new stores each year, a spokesperson for the supermarket said.
